2 possibilities: You may have an umbilical hernia, which is a defect in the abdominal wall at the level of the umbilicus. If the area is exquisitely tender and inflamed, it is possible, depending on the size of the defect, that incarceration of the underlying bowel has occurred. Alternatively, you may have a boil or furuncle at the navel from a prior break in the skin. You should probably see a physician.
