50,000: Very high doses of vitamin D are used weekly for four weeks followed up by 1000 to 5000 units daily for a few more weeks.
More importantly, it is uncommon for a woman your age to need so much vitamin D. Has your doctor told you why you need so much vitamin D? I would like to learn his/her answers.

Sun: The flesh of fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin d are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. Some mushrooms provide vitamin d2 in variable amounts. Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals often contain added vitamin d, as do some brands of orange juice, yogurt, margarine and other food products.
