It is normal: Periods are often irregular in young girls, especially during the first year of menstrual cycles. Don't worry. It will come on when it's ready.

12 year old: girls have irregular periods as a rule. It will come on when it is ready and it may continue to be irregular for up to a year. Be sure you have spoken with her about puberty, avoidance of sexual activity and the expectation of irregularity and emotional ups and downs during puberty. Make it a point to spend casual time with her and keep your ear open to listen whenever she wants to talk.

"Late period": Depending on the age of onset of first period, this may be normal. The first year of periods can be very irregular because the "cycles" are not set, yet. She may skip a month or may seem to have 2 in one month. The flow may be heavy or light with varying durations. If the periods are remain irregular, very painful or cease to come, have her checked by her physician.
