Yes: It usually works best to alternate heat and ice.

Yes: You can use ice intermittently for no more than 15 minutes. But many patients have found that alternating ice, then warm moist packs for 15 minutes each is more effective. It is really personal preference, and it entirely up to individual responses. You might try both or either one singly to find the best response.

Generally done.: "Ice at first, then later heat". Sadly, I missed the best publication for this. Female patient slipped on ice, huge bruise on buttock (ICE LIMITS PAIN AND INFLAMMATION AND BRUISING IN FIRST 24 HRS), then used a hot water bottle. Had a huge bruise except for normal unbruised area in the center In The SHape of a HOT Water Bottle !

Ice: Ice packs are generally used for immediate care of any injury to help bring down the immediate inflammation, bleeding and swelling. For a long term injury, heat is better.

Yes: You can try it, the more important thing is to figure out what is causing your pain and treat that. Using a cool pack is treating a symptom and not necessarily the disease. Heat may work as well. See your doctor and all the best.

Sure: Ice to the area can constrict blood vessels causing less inflammation and swelling to the area of injury. The Ice can sometimes dull the pain as well. Ice often works best right after the injury or during use. That is why you will often see an athletes shoulder or elbow, or knee etc wrapped up in ice packs on the sidelines. See your Dr. for eval if pain persists. Best wishes.

Ice pack for pain: Yes, that is a wonderful use for an ice pack. Might use it wrapped in a towel to protect your skin. Use it for 15 -20 minutes every 2-4 hours as tolerated. Good source of pain control and decreases swelling.
