Many possible causes: An infection like pneumonia, bronchitis, or virus can cause pain when you breathe. An sprain or strain of the ribs or muscles in the chest can do this too. A pinched nerve is less likely but possible. If you have fever, and shortness of breath, or constant pain, etc., to ER or MD.

Maybe but doubtful: More info would make it easier to give a better answer: what hurts to breathe-your back, front of chest, inside chest? If it's chest wall pain, it could be due to nerve inj or vertebral or rib dysfunction. If its 'inside' - could be pleurisy or lung which is serious.A good history & phys. incl osteopathic hands-on exam may provide some answers. You should seek help ASAP to rule out anything serious.
