Stretching may help: While making an accurate diagnosis is not possible with just a little bit of info, often pain in the upper to mid back when breathing can be a result of a rib injury. Anti-inflammatories such as advice with some stretching can be helpful.

Not nerve?: "hurts to breathe" is from a pulled muscle or cracked rib until proven otherwise. Pinching a thoracic nerve is unusual. Ibuprofen helps (need to take it around the clock for a few days for it to kick in). If not better, get it checked out. The "hurts to breathe" part is not good. By not taking full breaths you may be at risk for atelectasis and/or pneumonia.
