When tuberculosis: affects not only the spinal cord but the nerve roots that come out of the spinal cord, and cause dysfunction of both the spinal cord and the nerve roots. Once can have pain in areas where the affected nerve root supply, as well as symptoms consistent with spinal cord dysfunction -- like gait imbalance, dexterity changes, issues with balance, weakness, worsening fine finger motions, etc.
