Pulmonary TB: Which is the most common form causes cough, sputum production sometimes with blood, night sweats and weight loss. It is diagnosed by chest x-ray and sputum exam and culture. Extra pulmonary TB such as in the kidney, bone or nervous system will cause symptoms related to the organ involved but renal TB may be remarkably silent until late in the disease.

Lung inflammation: Tuberculosis (TB) can spread to many organ systems but involves lungs as initial site of infection. It induces intense inflammation that destroys normal lung tissue & causes cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever & night sweat. Body's immune system tries to contain infection by forming granulomas to wall off the TB bug, but cytokines released by activated immune cells causes damage to lungs.

Bacterial infection: TB is an infection due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The most common location of infection is in the lungs and is manifested by cough with sputum, low grade fever and weight loss. TB can spread to other organs too if left untreated. Chest xray, serologic testing or sputum culture are means to diagnose. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
