A type of MDS: Refractory anemia with excess blasts is a type of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The bone marrow will have between 5-19% blasts per high powered microscope field. This illness is a "preleukemia" or an evolving leukemia. Progression to leukemia can happen in 12 months, and many patients will require transfusions for low blood counts. Treatments can prevent progression to leukemia.
