What is refractory anemia with excess of blasts?

A type of MDS: Refractory anemia with excess blasts is a type of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The bone marrow will have between 5-19% blasts per high powered microscope field. This illness is a "preleukemia" or an evolving leukemia. Progression to leukemia can happen in 12 months, and many patients will require transfusions for low blood counts. Treatments can prevent progression to leukemia.

I was diagnosed with microcytic anemia due to heavy menstruation. Pbs shows few atypical lymphocytes. No blast seen. Could this be a reaction related?
