What is hemolysis?

Red cells destroyed: When red blood cells are burst / destroyed, either in the patient or in the specimen tube. In illness, this can result from anything from malaria to running hard and pounding the pavement with one's feet. There are at least a hundred hemolytic anemias. A hemolyzed specimen is dangerous as one can mistakenly think reported labs, especially potassium, are off.
