Re-shaping of bone: This involves smoothing the jawbone after the teeth have been extracted; eliminating sharp edges and irregularities. This allows the gums to heal better and provides a better base on which to place a denture. Discomfort should not be much different than what occurs from having the teeth extracted. Alveoplasty is normally done at the same time as the extractions.

Bone surgery: Alveoloplasty is shaping of the alveolar bone using surgical methods. After the completion of the alveoplasty surgery, the particular area of the bone gets swollen and sore. Medications are prescribed by the dentist, which will reduce the discomfort within a period of 3-4 days.
