Blood LDL Level: LDL is "low density lipoprotein", a particle that carries cholesterol in the blood. Increased LDL is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and premature death. Lowering LDL can reduce this risk. LDL levels are estimated by cholesterol (LDL-C). Because the cholesterol carried in LDL particles is highly variable many doctors prefer to use LDL particle number (LDL-P) to manage LDL related risk
