It means...: ... "Syphilis, or the Gallic [French] disease". This is the title of the first written description of syphilis in Europe, in 1530, by the medical writer Fracastoro. When the disease spread epidemically in Europe around that time, people in various countries named it according to their enemies. Other names included "Spanish pox" and "Italian disease".
