Options: Paget's can be treated with removal of the nipple-areola area (lumpectomy) followed by radiation or total mastectomy which includes the nipple. Chemotherapy is not usually needed. Hormonal therapy is used if the tumor is estrogen or Progesterone positive.

Surgery: First, mammogram and possibly MRI to determine whether there is more cancer in the breast. If not, then lumpectomy, which would remove the nipple & areola, followed by radiation, is one option. Mastectomy is another option, and reconstruction can be done at the same time. See a breast surgeon or surgical oncologist for a discussion of treatment options.

How can Paget's disease of breast be treated?

Possible: The treatment is surgical resection. However, because paget's disease of the breast is associated with an underlying breast cancer (in situ and/or invasive) in almost 90% of cases, often without an associated breast mass or mamm abnormality. This underlying cancer has to be treated accordingly based on the er/pr/her2 neu and staging, etc.The prognosis will depend on the underlying beast cancer.

Not typical : Paget's disease of the breast is most common in the 50's, though there have been documented cases in adolescents and in folks in their 80's. If there is any kind of unusual finding on the outside of the breast (male or female), or new lumps felt, it is best to have it checked by a physician. Hope this is helpful.
