Don't DIY: Best to see a Dr. and have it evaluated. You don't know if it is a pinched nerve and you may need treatment that cannot be done with your own home care.

Must get diagnosis: Heat/cold along w/ mild pain meds may help w/ immediate discomfort, but w/out knowing what's actually causing pain, can't know how serious problem is.Could be a pinched nerve, but those usually start in the neck.Could be torn tendon/ligament w/ referred pain which could require prolotherapy or other care.Could be peripheral nerve inj. or other problem needing osteopathic manipulation.See Dr.

Get checked: While you can take OTC pain medicine for pain relief, like acetaminophen or naproxen, your suspicion of pinched nerve pain means this needs to be evaluated. If you do have nerve pain, then you may even require surgery to release a trapped nerve. Delay in such a condition can end with permanent nerve damage. See your clinician.
