Amer. trypanosomes: Seein T. cruzi is diagnostic of Chagas by microscopic examination of anticoagulated blood, or buffy coat for motile parasites; or by thin and thick blood smears stained with Giemsa. Immunoassays distinguish strains and include complement fixation, indirect hemagglutination, indirect fluorescence, radioimmunoassays, ELISA. diagnosis and strain identification can be made using PCR

blood smears?: During the acute phase of infection, parasites can be seen on blood smears using a microscope. This works during the acute phase because the parasites are actually circulating in the blood. A variety of other tests can also be used: polymerase chain reaction (PCR), complement fixation, ELISA, radioimmunoassays, indirect hemagglutination, etc.
