At any time: When two people find one another, and are having or considering having sex -- especially if it's unprotected -- they should really both go and get tested. Isn't this what two people who truly loved each other would do? If you only get tested yourself, you won't know the status of you partner, and you'll be left wondering in any case. Love should be wonderful. Bet tested together now.

Now...: ...But you will have to take it again later, and I would follow-up with ELISA testing as well in a few months. Preferably after a period of abstinence, and with the clear unmistaken understanding that your partner is 100% monogamous with you.

HIV: If you have acquired HIV disease in the past 5 weeks you can take the HIV PCR for RNA anytime. What you should have done is to have your new partner tested and to use protected sex only until you are certain that he is negative and monogamous. You should also be tested for other STDs, particularly syphilis. If this is a woman, test for HIV is not needed.
