Here are some ...: The limited information as described suggests the pain is more likely related with some disorders of muscle, joints or nerves of the local area than with stones of gallbladder or kidneys. Fortunately, a combo of detailed Hx stressing quality, quantity, and sequence of events of the symptoms + proper physical exam + timely tests as needed will help reach right Dx for better Rx / care / counseling.

Hard to say: Intermittent left flank pain under rib cage is not the location for kidney pain. Most kidney stones are asymptomatic until they enter the ureter. At that point the pain is so severe that the typical patient is literally rolling on the floor. If the pain only occurs in this area not likely to be gallbladder. But if it is also felt in the back and on the right side it may be from the gall bladder.

Flank/abdominal: pain has so many potential causes of the benign and serious types that 'guessing' on line with the limited information you provide would be doing you a dis-service, if not outright harm. That being said what you have provided is too vague to even venture a guess. I would recommend you see your doctor for a more complete evaluation.

Some possibilities: Discomfort in this region could be muscular, gas entrapment in the upper left colon, irritability of a nerve, spleen abnormalities or left lung base problems. Your physician will take a thorough history and perform a physical examination and then order any appropriate tests in order to make a diagnosis if your symptoms persist.

It could be muscle: strain, inflammation of the stomach or spleen etc. Gallstones or gallbladder and liver inflammation present with right upper quadrant pain, not left sided discomfort. Kidney pain is usually located at mid-back and a Urinalysis will show blood and/or pus cells. Go see your Dr for a thorough exam. God Bless you!

Left flank pain: Can occur due to different factors. It could be due to muscle strain, kidney or ureteral stone or hydrocephalus or infections or mass. an examination with urine analysis may be helpful
