Fatty tumors: Lipomas are fatty tumors of unknown cause, sometimes hereditary. Some people get none, some get one and some get many. Those that are painful may need surgical removal.

Common occurrence: They are the most common soft tissue benign tumor. They get worse with weight gain & shrink & may resolve with weight loss. The incidence of these benign tumors made of adipocytes (fat cells) is 1:1000. If you have multiple, ask your family if anyone else has them. If so, you could have the very rare autosomal dominant familial multiple lipomatosis. http://www.aafp.org/afp/2003/0215/p729.html
