A member asked:

I am in my second trimester, i refuse to take ptu (propylthiouracil) for my hyperthyroid it makes me feel sick and the taste is horrid, is my baby safer now than 1st tri?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Methimazole: Hi. Methimazole is actually preferred over PTU (propylthiouracil) in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Talk with your endocrinologist about using methimazole. Treatment should be on the lighter side (i.e., leave you a little on the hyperthyroid side). Fetal thyroid should be monitored, as your Graves' antibodies cross the placenta, and can cause fetal goiter. Good luck!
