Anal incontinence: In a 4th degree perineal laceration the circular sphincter muscle was completely torn and repaired at the time of delivery. A muscle with a scar typically looses some degree of its original function. In case of the sphincter muscle, minor loss of function manifests as difficulty holding gas or passing little liquid stool with passing gas. Maintain regular bowel movements and avoid constipation.
