Testing the stool: The first thing to do is to test the stool. Your provider should order fecal leukocytes (white cells, to check for infection or inflammation), stool bacterial culture (checks for E. Coli, shigella, salmonella, campylobacter, etc.), stool ova and parasites, and stool c. difficile toxin. If that doesn't show an answer, you may need a gastroenterologist consultation and possibly a colonoscopy.
