Common? How so?: Careful of the hallway lore that people speak in dimly lit corridors. I have many MS patients who have never complained of that symptom and some who have. MS is diagnosed by a specialist and by taking a careful detailed history of things the person has been experiencing to see if it fits a "story" consistent with the diagnosis. MRI of the brain and spinal cord are also important to the diagnosis.

Basics: MS is best diagnosed via MRI of brain, and maybe spinal cord. Spinal fluid analysis may be handy in complex presentations. The tightness of the leg is an erroneous category, as it is the "MS hug" over the trunk which is seen not uncommonly.
