Can macrobid work for kidney infection? that's what i'm prescribed but i was told it's usually only prescribed for bladder infections. thanks!

YES: Macrobid is approved for treating infections that affect the Urogenital system which includes the kidneys. If you had a Urinalysis with a C&S than you would know the bacteria and the medication that was best to use. Good luck.

It might be semantic: Macrobid is nitrofurantoin, an older antibiotic which is quite effective in uncomplicated urinary tract infections (of the bladder). You are correct that it should not be used for pyelonephritis, a true infection of the kidney. But "kidney infection" is used loosely, and often any UTI is called a kidney infection. If you do have pyelonephritis, other antibiotics should be prescribed.
