See below: The gene responsible for progeria has been identified (lamin a) in april 2003. A blood test can now be performed progeria is due to a point mutation in this gene. It is not usually passed down in families. The gene change is a chance, rare occurrence.

LMNA gene: There is currently a DNA-based, diagnostic test developed through the Progeria Research Foundation. Testing is for mutations within the LMNA gene (which makes Lamin A protein).
