Many possibilities: There are many lipid tests available, but the strongest evidence indicates that a total cholesterol and an HDL (good cholesterol) is a good start, and this can be done without fasting. A standard lipid panel is another option, and includes these two plus triglycerides and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels, and requires at least an 8-hr fast. Lipid vs Lipoprotein: Hyperlipidemia refers to abnormal levels of cholesterol or triglyceride (tg). These lipids are carried in cholesterol enriched (hdl, ldl) or tg enriched (vldl, idl, chylomicrons) lipoproteins. Lipoprotein values are most commonly estimated by measuring lipids. Because the lipid carried inside particles is highly variable many experts advise measuring lipoprotein particle number directly.
