Sounds like: Vertical/longitudinal melanonychia. The causes of which are quite numerous, most are benign as it not suggestive of more concerning problems but occasionally they are from more concerning causes. To be able to better help out, it would require more information and ideally a picture. If worried, review this with your doc. Best of luck.
