A member asked:

Do you avoid social situations because of your anxiety disorder?

No: The short answer is no. Avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations will grow to include more and more situations. It's important to confront anxiety-provoking situations. Fortunately, however, this can be done little-by-little, starting with easier situations. Cognitive-behavioral therapy by a psychologist is an excellent treatment choice.

Yes: All types of anxiety disorders can cause a person to want to avoid social situations. This avoidance occurs because the anxiety is so strong that a person "can't stand" the idea of feeling uncomfortable or anxious, so he avoids it. Unfortunately, this avoidance becomes costly over time. But with proper treatment from a behavior therapist, avoidance can be overcome and anxiety will decrease.
