Vertical Fracture: If the tooth has broken as you described, it is most likely hopeless and needs to be extracted immediately. Call a dentist at once to make an appointment and avoid a slow, painful process of swelling, pain, and infection. In the end, the tooth will still need to be removed. In case it is restorable, the sooner you go the better your chances of saving it.

Broken tooth: Will not self-repair. Bacteria communicate to underlying tissues along the split. Please, you need immediate dental care.
