Variety of possib: The joint pain in the hands brings up a long list of possibilities. Additional history, medications taken, family history are all important. Your mother would be best served but seeing her MD for further exam, evaluation and testing.

Arthritis?: swollen? all small joints? deformities? might be osteo or rheumatoid arthritis. can try some orc antiinflammatories and heat. if no better needs evaluation
