Infection: A wound infection is caused by a bacterium. There are thousands of species of bacteria that we live with every day; a smaller subset are the culprits of wound infections. Consider infection if there is pain, redness, odor, drainage, lack of healing over a reasonable time period, and any changes in the wound that are negative (enlarging, change in color of the tissue, etc.)
