A member asked:

Under what conditions do doctors put people put on antibiotics for long periods of time?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Treat until better: That is an axiom I learned as an infectious diseases fellow. Often it is hard to know the future --'when' exactly a patient might be able to come off of therapy. That's why FOLLOW UP is the key to determining that. Some infections automatically take a long time to treat - like bone/joint infections, endocarditis, etc. Make sure you ask your doc specifically what the goals are for treatment.
