Wisdom teeth: usually appear between the ages of 16 and 25. If you are experiencing pain, swollen lymph nodes and it does not go away or if you find it difficult to open your mouth, you should see a dentist for evaluation, x-ray and wisdom teeth removal. However, impacted wisdom teeth that are free from disease and symptoms should not be operated on.

What is the recovery time for getting wisdom teeth pulled out?

Dr. Jeffrey Bassman answered

Depends: It is a surgery. The recovery time can be affected by many variables- upper teeth or lower, impacted/partial impaction/fully erupted, infected or not, root tip or broken tooth, difficulty of removal, density of the bone, your overall immunity. Normally a week to 10 days is a good rule of thumb, but everyone is different and every extraction is different.

A 13-year-old female asked:
Does every dentist have to give you an IV when you get your wisdom teeth pulled out?

Dr. Gary Sandler answered

Absolutely not: Some people only need and want local anesthesia; some have it done that way with sweet air (laughing gas) as an added relaxer, and some require IV sedation. It depends mostly on your wishes, although there are specific patients and definite circumstances when it would be highly advisable. You should discuss this issue with the surgeon prior to setting up the appointment for removal.
