Kiwis and rugby ...: Hyperextension injury at the knuckle joint is either a sprain, or a fracture. Both can be quite painful. Treat initally with rest, ice, elevation and by strapping the index finger to middle finger for support. Significant fractures will affect resting position, or movement. Compare to the non injured hand at rest, and when making a fist. If asymmetry, ongoing pain see GP for examination +/- xray.
