See dentist: The best thing to do is to see a dentist and have the teeth treated ASAP. Untreated cavities will progress until there is pain, swelling, and infection. This can effect the entire body. Sweets are only one cause of cavities. Other factors are the amount of sugars and acids in his diet in other forms, poor brushing, not flossing, habits like smoking and more. Regular dental care is needed.

Fillings: Yes, cavities left untreated can be become worse and potentially dangerous and lead to infections. You would need him to go to the dentist to get treatment and make sure he sees the dentist every 6 months for exams. Some other common causes of cavities could be snacking often, drinking soda or juices, or not brushing twice a day or flossing daily.
