Sprain vs fracture: At that age girls may or may not be skeletally mature, and could have either a small chip fracture at the ankle or a sprain. The more bruising and limitation the more likely a fracture. The RICE therapy is appropriate for 48 hours, with heat to follow. If still troubled at tis point I would have it looked at.Depending on the exam, x-rays may be needed.

Ankle Pain In 16 yr: If the ankle continues to hurt with walking and basic comfort measures have been tried, you will want to be seen to make sure there is no small fracture. Often a strain/sprain can be as painful as a fracture.

See a doctor : I would recommend that you take her to her doctor or an orthopedist. If you can't see either of them, then take her to an emergency room. She needs to be examined by a doctor & probably needs an X-ray. Sprains can often feel worse than fractures, and take longer to heal, but she should be checked to be sure of the diagnosis.

Ortho consult: If the symptoms are not improving with rest, and ice for a week, she needs to be seen by her orthopedist. She could have a tendonitis, sprain or even a stress fracture if she is not improving.
