Best to wait.: The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends not introducing 'table milk' until 12 months old. The formula has more nutrition in it and is better tolerated by the intestines. When you do make the switch, make sure to use whole milk until he's 2 years old -- he needs the extra calories for good brain growth.

When he's 1 year old: He can drink water from a double-handled, open-mouth cup now, first with your help, then on his own. On weaning to a cup at 1 yr., limit milk & milk products to 16-21 oz./day to avoid constipation, decreased appetite for food & iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia, which can cause developmental delays. Don't let him sip milk/juice ad lib from a Sippee cup. 1st dental checkup is at 1 yr.

12 months: The reason we recommend 12 months is that starting cow's milk prior to this point is associated with iron deficiency anemia. Just a couple more cans!
