It is safe: Glutamine is a useful nutritional supplement for people with part of the small intestine removed (short bowel syndrome) but not for resection of the colon. I can't find any references suggesting its use in ibs.

It is safe: but if glutamine helps, then you won't be seeing all these high-power commercials touting treatments for IBS. Given that the cause for IBS is obscure, you may try anything as long as it does no harm.
