TMJ: If you have jaw joint dysfunction, displaced disc can cause popping as it moves. If disc degenerated and you have bone on bone, you well experience grinding sound. Ear infection or fluid in ear can cause popping sensation. You need to see ENT and Dentist. Referral to Oral Surgeon and/or Orthodontist may be in order. Please seek comprehensive care.

Eustachian tube: dysfunction. The Eustachian tube leads from the middle ear to the posterior pharynx and equalizes pressure in the middle ear. If it is swollen it can cause popping as pressure equalizes. Allergies may contribute. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Several possibilites: would be easy to tell with an exam. The popping is from pressure changes from behind the ear through the eustachian tube connecting the ear to the throat and out of the throat. So... ear infection, clogged/irriatated eustachian, or sore throat are the possibilites. Some of the worse throat infections (fusibacterium) hit this area.

ETD or TMJ: Could be either eustachian tube dysfunction or TMJ. If it bothers you, see an ENT doc to sort out.
