Ear vs TMJ: Ear of TMJ. If the popping occurs with swallowing, likely eustachian tube dysfunction. If occurs with opening and closing of mouth, likely TMJ. Popping without pain does not require treatment. If you also have jaw pain, restricted oral opening, headache, bruxism, see TMJ specialist.
