Fairly common: A conservative estimate of frequency is that vanishing twin syndrome occurs in 21-30% of multifetal pregnancies. More commonly identified now that first trimester ultrasound is widely used. There are no known preventive measures since the loss usually occurs because of cord implantation abnormalities.
