Relax: You have an ingrown infected nail and it's best to remove it so the infection clears. This is done under anesthesia and is fairly painless. Usually it feels better immediately than it did with the nail on. The nail will grow back in over ther course of the next several months.

Stop Everything.: Pulling the nail off to remedy an ingrown toenail seems a bit extreme. The most severely infected toenail can be remedied by gently removing a partial slip of the nail plate, only. Generally, a match stick size border piece is removed. The toe does have to be numbed and a small dressing applied afterwards. I have performed this over 2000 times, and I rarely does the entire nail need to be removed.
