Depends on crack: If the tooth is fractured in a manner that the broken piece can be removed without compromising the root or bony support, then root canal therapy and a post & crown should do the trick. A major fracture into the bone will necessitate extraction and possible replacement with an implant.

Not necessarily: If the crack goes into the root of a lower anterior tooth, a root canal may actually contribute more to the instability of the tooth. Need to decide on options...root canal possibly with a crown and a post, extraction and a permanent bridge to fill in the space, an implant. Weigh all opinions.

See endodontist: Oral infections such as certain chronic abscess or cracked, fractured teeth can often be difficult to diagnose and treat. In addition to dental school, endodontists receive 2-3 more years of advanced education in this kind of diagnosis and treatment. That’s why you should see an endodontist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Yes: Root canal treatment will take away pain if you have an exposure or other disease in the nerve. But if the tooth is cracked don't waste your money. The tooth needs to be removed

If cracked, extract: If the crack goes down into the root, then you need to have the tooth removed. If it stops higher, and has simply irritated the nerve, then root canal work may work.

Possibly: If fracture is the cause, root canal treatment probably will help. If cause is traumatic occlusion, or traumatic abscess, or gum/bone loss you may need a different approach. Please see an Endodontist, a specialist who trained to diagnose Dental pain, and who does root canal treatment exclusively, to best answer your question.
