Unknown: The genetic nature of type one diabetes is well established with an autoimmune mechanism causing the destruction of the islet cells over time. One theory is that vitamin D deficiency may play a role. Studies show mixed results. Is it a toxic environmental exposure? Changing penetrance of susceptibility genes is another leading theory as well.
