Cystic acne: Cystic acne, or nodulocystic acne, is the most severe form of acne vulgaris. Deep, inflamed breakouts develop on the face and/or other areas of the body. The blemishes themselves can become large; some may measure up to several centimeters across. Treatment is usually with oral antibiotics like solodyn (minocycline) or Doryx and in severe cases accutana.

Cystic acne + others: Age makes a difference. Presuming you are in teens or early 20's, the most likely cause is cystic acne. These are deep acne lesions that must not be squeezed and often cause scarring--must see dermatologist. Other possibilities are angioedema (caused by an allergen, a food, a medication), bug bite, sebaceous cysts (ice, us. Resolve) small abscess (red, hot, tender--need antibiotic &/or drainage.

Acne or sebaceous cy: Your description sounds like either recurrent sebaceous cyst, or cystic acne. The first is filled with skin epithelium (keratin) and sebaceous material that is foul smelling; these may resolve on own--put ice compresses 10-15 min/day and anti-inflammatory. Cystic acne can scar and need to see a dermatologist who may inject with a cortisone. Also c prior answers under same topic.
