A member asked:

During my laminctomy, ruptured disc l4/5 and l5/s1 and stenosis ,my surgeon found 2 cracked facet joints. now he recommends a fusion. is he correct?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not yet: Facet joints are often resected partially (medial facetectomy) during performance of a laminectomy for stenosis. In the process facet joints may also be cracked. These almost always heal with time. Do not have fusion unless pain persists >6 months and can be localized with facet blocks to the specific fractured facets.
