Brain atrophy: Brain atrophy/shrinkage is a normal part of aging. If it occurs too early in life, that is abnormal however. I would be concerned if there was significant brain shrinkage at 48, but not at 88, so it is really age dependent.

A range: It is normal for our brains to shrink in size as we age, but half of older adults do NOT get dementia. However, Alzheimer's brains atrophy at a faster rate with the associated cognitive loss. Multiple sclerosis can be associated with rapid shrinkage, and this can be a sign of impending disability, and also causes memory issues.
