Total cholesterol: Hi. Total cholesterol is worthless except for calculations. What are your LDL, HDL, and triglycerides? They're meaningful. Do you have a family history of premature heart attack? Statins lower risk of heart attack. Many docs don't want to start young people on chronic therapy, but if you've got HTN and a bad lipid profile especially with a positive family history, I think it's easily justified.
