Odd question: Germs normally enter the blood and travel to the meninges. The exact point of entry is impossible to pinpoint. For some who have it after trauma, the entry is an obvious wound or break. Some feel it can enter through the nose through a thin bony layer, but that is hard to prove. The spinal fluid column is connected to the rest of the meninges and remains an easiest point to get a sample.
