Sometimes: MRI studies can demonstrate meningeal enhancement and other findings indicating meningitis. However, many patients suspected of having meningitis do not have an abnormality seen with MRI imaging which indicates meningitis. A negative MRI study does not exclude meningitis.

Yes: An mri can be one of the tests used for imaging of the brain, spinal cord, and in a meningitis like picture, it can show inflammation. This is nonspecific and doesn't differentiate between bacterial and viral meningitis. A spinal tap is a true test that would provide the physician with more information.
